Class 5 _Lesson 01_ The Bundle of Sticks

The Bundle of Sticks

Essay on

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

We know famous Aesop's story of the Farmer and his quarrelling sons. The sons could easily break a single piece of stick. But when several sticks were made into a bundle none of them was able to break it. The sons understood the value of unity and gave up their quarrels. This story leads a famous proverb "united we stand , devided we fall ".

Unity is the basis of society and nationhood. It means that so long as the members of a family or people of country keep together, no one will be able to harm them. But if they divide, they must fall.

As a social creature , every single person needs the help of others. This means he or she cannot live alone. From ancient age to modern age , whether it was hunting or early cultivation, whether it was developing early cites in Greece or to form a league of nations or under a name of "United Nation" (1945) -- human beings learn true values of being united.

The lack of unity in people is very dangerous. In today's world, there is no substitute for unity in people which leads to continuous conflicts between eachother.
Human beings are capable of doing many things. But without unity, they cannot do even a single thing. Therefore, we should be aware of the value of unity for our own interest like those brothers in Aesop's story.
